Chapter 13

Leslie laughed at Ruffie as he rode with his head hanging out the window of Wendy’s car, tongue lolling in the breeze. Wendy had picked it up from The Lure, and Leslie followed in her truck. Fields flew by in a blur as Leslie kept up with the red Corolla that blazed a streak down the highway. Wendy signaled and turned off onto a gravel driveway.

The property sat between what looked like two sugarcane fields. There was a huge oak in the front yard with a bench beneath it. The house was old with a small front porch, and potted plants sat on an antique metal glider. The place was in need of a paint job. One of the shutters had fallen and leaned against the faded white siding.

As Leslie climbed out of her truck, Ruffie shot out of Wendy’s car like a bullet, and he marked everything in sight. Wendy pulled the bag containing Leslie’s comforter and sheets from the backseat and whistled as Ruffie headed around the side of the house. He paid her no mind.

Leslie took the bag from Wendy. “Ruffie, come,” she called out, and he came bounding back.

Wendy gave them both a look. “There must’ve been some serious bonding going on before I woke up,” she said as she headed for the porch.

“An egg goes a long way, and of course, belly rubs.”

“You’re a loose dog, Ruffie Halpin.” Wendy climbed up the steps and put the key in the lock.

Leslie stepped inside and breathed in Wendy’s scent as she looked around. The subtle hint of her perfume mingled with the smell of the older house. It was easy to tell where she spent most of her time. There was a chair near the windows; a blanket had been tossed over the back of it. A floor lamp stood next to it, and around the base were books and magazines. A dog bed lay near the couch; beneath it was a tan country rug with pictures of pinecones and trees around the edges. Above the hearth of the fireplace was an old shotgun resting on mounts.

“That belonged to my great-great-grandfather. I feel like it adds to the country cabin motif I have going in here. I’m going for the hunting lodge in the winter effect. In the summer, I change things around a bit.” Wendy leaned in close to Leslie, closed her eyes, and sniffed. “You smell so good. I need to shower, so you sit down anywhere and prop your feet up. The TV remote is on the coffee table,” she said as she took the bag from Leslie and dropped it near the kitchen table. “What can I fix you to drink?”

“I’m fine,” Leslie said as she stuffed her hands into her pockets. “Two cups of coffee is my limit.”

Ruffie ran out the doggie door into the fenced backyard and returned a second later, giving Leslie a big dog smile before he went to his bed and began nuzzling a stuffed moose. “Watch out for that.
